Week 1 - A New Starting Point

Hello everyone, this is the start of my new blog for a new game in development, currently untitled.

I have been developing a maze type game for my module Web Games Development, the game is currently very basic with character movement and the first level being the only things in the game at the moment.

In order to create this game I have used one of the labs available on the module site as a starting point, I would link it but anyone outside my class and the lecturer cannot see it. This lab has allowed me to create the basic maze layout and spawning of the character. I have then proceeded with the game adding character movement and making the code more manageable for later in the game's development.

This post is quite short I know but with other modules going on I was unable to proceed further than this in terms of this game's development. Later blogs should be more in depth with much more work going on but for now I will say farewell.

Game Project: Creating Game Week 11

Hey everyone, so we have finished the game, lots of things changed this week and last week since we are so close to the end so it might seem like the game jumped a few stages here but that's actually just what happened we made so much progress over the last two weeks.

Here is the new menu screen.
This menu uses white and grey text rather than white and red which we believe looks a lot better. The level select doesn't lead to anything but the How to Play takes the player through a short tutorial allowing them to understand the controls. The credits also leads to nothing as I mentioned last week we decided to leave the credits out for now.

Here is the game in action.
As you can see from this image the tile sheet is being used to show a better version of the level, as well as updated graphics for the gun and a key card. This is also only the first level of the game if the player advances there are three more levels they must navigate through to get to the boss, which in this case is a chinchilla image Calum had made for fun. We wanted to add something as a boss and it was last minute so the chinchilla had to do. I was going to upload a screen shot of each level but I think it is more effective if you try it out yourself, it is after all a game now... Link  (Might not be active if you are in the future. If you are find our Late Panda Facebook page and then ask for Spy Green we will give you an updated link then future person.)

Game Project: Creating Game Week 10

Hey everyone, I've finally done the credits, it does seems that the easiest tasks are left til last, guess they are the most boring. Quick screen shot! BLAM!

Heheh... anyway... After this version of the credits was finished we decided it would be best if they were not used in the beta test version, as they are incomplete. Some people have been left out as I couldn't remember the names of the people we had to thank and such, but this version of the credits will be looked upon once the game in being finished over the summer.

Down to the major points now... THE GAME IS FINSIHED! or at least the Alpha/Beta version, (depending on who you ask) is finished. We were also able to get time with some of the animation students in our university to play test the game. We actually got some good feedback how nice of them right? Anyway we have uploading the feedback data to our site assessments page as well as some other stuff.

I will stop myself from posting any images of the game until next week as after the feedback we would like to make some minor improvements so WAIT TIL THEN!!! muahahahahaa...

Thanks for reading, Stephen out...

Game Project: Creating Game Week 9

Hey everyone, I'm back, we had an Easter break for a week. It was great thanks for asking... anyway back to the reason you are reading this blog... Progress has been made, the sprites for all the characters have been created and changed so now they look awesome, thank you Calum, here is a quick screen shot.

The guards are now very identifiable as the blue security officers as well as the white coat wearing doctors can be identified as the civilians  in the final version of the game we will indicate which is which to the player so they know but for now we have put an indication in the how to play level that Calum created last week.

This version also contains several levels, if they player moves to the top right gap of the image they will spawn in a new area with more guards with different routes and obstacles that they will have to navigate. Well.. maybe not that different from the above image yet but what I just said is what we are aiming for in the final version for now it take you to a different level with guards and civilians scattered around with a different random mess of walls around the level, but we have to start somewhere...

We also have a tile sheet so we can make proper awesome looking levels now which is my goal over the last few weeks. Here is what the tiles look like. The lighter version of the tiles is hard to explain but it's so the player can see carter if he is ever displayed on top of the image which in some cases, due to the perspective, this may happen.

Game Project: Creating Game Week 8

Hey everyone, quick blog update for you here, I FINALLY got around to fixing the main menu screen, well sort of, the red text to indicate something was highlighted was always a bit off so I fixed that for starters, but that's not the main thing. The user can now select the Facebook and Twitter links that will take them to the Late Panda Facebook and Twitter pages. YAY! Although it does this with pop-ups which are stopped by most browsers... so.. not yay I guess but at least I tried. I don't think I'll fix this until full release but the menu looks a bit better now. See if you can spot the difference from the week 6 version.

As for the rest of the games progress I suggest to check out Andrews blog he does a very good explanation of the games current state this week, and if I am honest he has always known more of the progress of Spy Green since he is the coder.

Game Project: Creating Game Week 7

Hey everyone, so as far as I know this is the current state of Spy Green...

In this version of the game Carter's image has been updated to a more angled top down perspective, this is so it is more obvious to the player which direction you are facing. The guards and civilians have not quite been updated yet but they will be.

We have also added a clock image from another game to test the inventory system which is working in this version so WOO! Once the images for the items that will be contained in the game have been drawn this image will be replaced with one of them.
